About
Raised on the water in both Florida and Maine, Ben’s personal musical style is influenced by the music of the coast - calypso, reggae, ska – as much as it is shaped by classics, jam bands, jazz, blues, folk, funk and hip-hop. In his solo performances, Ben utilizes a wide variety of musical instruments, often accompanying steel drums and vocals with backing tracks recorded live by looping together beatboxing, guitar, bass, keys, saxophone, and vocals to create a dynamic experience that is full and expressive. Ben enjoys customizing his lessons or performances to best fit the wants and needs of his clients and the right atmosphere for each event.
With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music & Sound from Hampshire College, Ben is a professional musician dedicated to a life of performance, composition, education and sound mastering. He believes musical performance is a platform for reaching a deeper level of social engagement and communication, as it educates, inspires and brings people together.
Entertainment
Using double steel pans, vocals and looped in guitar, bass, keys, saxophone, beatboxing and vocal tracks, Ben Betts' solo show includes a range of musical styles, pulling from a 6-hour (and ever-growing) set list balanced with a diverse mix of old classics and modern, popular songs appropriate for all ages.
Ben has performed at restaurants, weddings, engagement and beach parties, farmer’s markets, and on boat cruises. He is equipped with a portable amplification system that can also function as a sound system, providing DJ services using a client-customized set list.
Private Instruction
Ben Betts offers private lessons to youth, teens, and adults on acoustic/electric guitar, ukulele, piano, bass, steel drums, drum set, beatboxing, song-writing, sound recording and music production.
Ben approaches music instruction with a focus on music theory. He encourages students to select the songs they most want to learn, and can provide instruction on one or multiple instruments. He focuses on ear training and tonal theory, and does not require the ability to read sheet music.
